About Us
Transforming Film was set up in 2019 by trainer and activist Nim Ralph and producer Cat Marshall to provide training, guidance, and consultation for the screen industries around gender identity and supporting trans professionals.
Nim and Cat began working together in 2019 on the feature film Everybody’s Talking About Jamie (2021), after Cat realised how little resource and guidance there was for producers on ensuring their sets were safe and supportive places for the trans professionals they were working with. Taking a 'do it yourself' approach Cat brought on board educator Nim Ralph as a gender identity consultant to devise a plan and tools to ensure the set was a safe space for all. Nim and Cat devised a plan of action to get resources and training out to all crew, and Nim created a toolkit for the production covering; basic understanding of gender identity, understanding the LGBTQ acronym and practical ways to ensure trans and non-binary folk feel welcome and safe.
After Everybody's Talking About Jamie, Nim and Cat carried on talking and working together to expand on this training, best practice, and support for the industry.
In 2021, Cat was approached to produce the BIFA longlisted short film Mars and said yes on the condition that Nim came onboard too. This gave Cat and Nim the opportunity to test and try out many of those ideas they’d discussed after Everybody’s Talking About Jamie. They then started to formalise a lot of their ideas and experiences, and combining Nim's experience as a trainer for 15+ years, and Cat's experience in film and TV for 10+ years, Transforming Film was born.
Transforming Film now aims to build on this, and working with other organisations, hopes to lead the way in changing how the screen industries creates and works.
In 2022, Nim and Cat were given a grant by the Screen Industries Growth Network to develop their first round of training for producers and production companies. The training proved hugely popular and due to demand Cat and Nim were able to run a second training funded again by the Screen Industries Growth Network.
Nim has over fifteen years of experience in training and facilitation, whilst Cat has over ten years’ experience working in the screen industries, giving Transforming Film a blend of real-world vision and screen industry knowledge.
